Sowore Arrested and Released by Nigerian Immigration at Lagos Airport

Activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore was briefly detained by Nigerian Immigration officials upon his arrival at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos, early Sunday morning.

Sowore, who had been listed as a person of interest following last August’s #EndBadGovernance protests, was taken into custody shortly after landing.

Although Sowore was not in Nigeria during the protests, he played a prominent role in supporting the movement online, promoting the cause and encouraging nationwide protests through his platform.

However, after some minutes of reports of his detaining, Sowore took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm his release.

I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention and my passport released back to me. #RevolutionNow, Sowore posted.

Sowore has been at odds with the Nigerian government on numerous occasions.

His previous arrests have drawn widespread attention, both locally and internationally, raising concerns about the state of civil liberties and the freedom of expression in the country.

It remains to be seen whether any further action will be taken by the authorities.
