Forty-seven inmates have escaped from Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, Liberia, according to a statement from Liberia’s Ministry of Justice on Monday.

The ministry said it is working with the police and prison authorities to recapture the inmates who escaped the maximum security prison Sunday evening.

“The Ministry of Justice is deeply concerned about this incident and is taking all necessary measures to ensure the capture of the escaped inmates,” the ministry said. The ministry did not specify whether any escapees had been recaptured yet.

According to the ministry, an initial investigation revealed that the inmates could flee due to a security breach.

The justice ministry said the national police force has deployed additional officers to aid the search operation. It further called on the inmates who escaped to turn themselves in to avoid facing additional charges and warned members of the public not to assist the escaped inmates.

“We urge the public to remain calm and to report any information that may lead to the recapture of the inmates,” the ministry added.
