The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has activated its disease management system to 0versee and control the national response to the recent monkeypox (mpox) outbreak.

According to Dr Dougbeh Nyan, Director-General of NPHIL, this move is part of the efforts to prevent the further spread of the suspected and confirmed disease cases and ensure public health safety across Liberia.

At the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular press briefing, Nyan revealed that the system will oversee measures to control and monitor the outbreak.

The plan includes inspecting key entry points such as Roberts International Airport, the Bo Waterside border, and other crossings into Liberia.

The team will also assess border points between Guinea and Ivory Coast to strengthen surveillance and response efforts, Nyan said.

He reported that Liberia had seven suspected cases of mpox, with one confirmed. He clarified that while six of the cases were initially reported as positive, they are not active, and all patients have recovered without any deaths.

Nyan stressed that early reporting and monitoring are key and encouraged anyone with symptoms to call the designated hotline.
