The Weekend, a psychological thriller directed by Daniel Oriahi, has grossed over ₦8 million at the Nigerian box office within just two days of its release, setting a new record for independently produced Nollywood films. The film’s distributor, Filmone Entertainment, confirmed the figures in an official statement on Instagram, highlighting the rapid success of the movie in such a short time.
“Smashing records one week at a time. The Weekend has grossed over 8 million Naira at the box office. Thank you for your love and support towards this incredible movie. Don’t miss out. Watch now in all cinemas,” the post said.
This milestone followed the film’s earlier recognition when it was selected to premiere at the prestigious 2024 Tribeca Film Festival in New York, making it the first independently produced Nollywood film to achieve this honour.
Produced by Uche Okocha of Trino Motion Pictures, The Weekend features a gripping narrative centred on an orphaned woman who, in her search for belonging, visits her fiancé’s seemingly perfect family, only to unravel their hidden dark secrets. The film’s cast includes Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Bucci Franklin, Meg Otanwa, Keppy Ekpeyong Bassey, Gloria Anozie-Young, and Damilola Ogunsi.
