Nollywood Actress, Sharon Okpamen Passes Away After Childbirth

391

Nollywood actress and producer, Sharon Okpamen, has tragically passed away following childbirth.

Movie producer Stanley Ontop announced the news on his official Instagram page yesterday.

He wrote:

“Nollywood Actor and Producer Sharon Okpamen has unfortunately passed on.

“It’s a sad day for Nollywood & the Edo entertainment industry. Sharon, who was a filmmaker, actress, entrepreneur and humanitarian, has left a significant void in the industry.

“May her soul rest in perfect peace, Amen @sharonokpamen

It can only get better”

Okpamen, 35, began her acting career in 2010 with a role in Touch Not My Crown. Over time, she appeared in over 100 Nollywood films and also produced her own movie, Night Hustlers.

Tragically, after giving birth to her second child, she reportedly fell into a coma and passed away shortly after.

Her death adds to the number of women who have met their demise due to childbirth.

In 2020, about 82,000 Nigerian women died due to pregnancy-related complications, a slight improvement on the previous year, but an increase on previous decades.

The causes of death included severe haemorrhage, high blood pressure (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia), unsafe abortion and obstructed labour.

According to The Guardian, doctors and activists say high maternal mortality rates reflect a lack of trust in a broken public healthcare system and little political will to fix it.
