Abuja Residents Protest Against Navy Signpost On Iddo Community Land

Abuja residents of the Iddo Community, in their numbers, have blocked the Airport Road to protest the takeover of lands by the Nigerian Navy (NN).

Using the power of social media, the residents have shared crowdsourced footage on X, a platform for raising awareness, to demand the Navy vacate their lands.

The protesters call on the FCT Minister to intervene, displaying placards with inscriptions such as “FCT Minister. Come to our rescue, Leave our land alone,” “Save farmers, fight hunger,” “We love Nigeria, but we need justice,” and “We love defence but need justice,” as they demand the Navy vacate the community.

However, a February 2024 media report by SaharaReporters indicates the signpost was an attempt by the Navy to displace residents of the Iddo community, a residential area housing hundreds of students living around the University of Abuja.

The residents are now decrying the perceived attempt to evict them so the Nigerian Navy can relocate to the community.

Protesters have described the subtle threats of placing a signpost on their land as “illegal” and “inhumane.”
