The Importers Association of Nigeria (IMAN) have accused the Nigerian Customs of continuing to collect import duties on food items despite President Bola Tinubu’s directive to suspend such tariffs.

The Chairman of IMAN’s Northern region, Aminu Dan-Iya, said that Customs officials have not stopped collecting duties because they have not received official communication about the suspension.

“Customs officials tell our members at entry points that they don’t have written communication about the suspension,” Dan-Iya said. “Nothing has changed; we’re paying duties as usual.”

Dan-Iya further expressed IMAN’s confusion over why the presidential order, announced weeks ago, has not been implemented.

“The truth is that something is fundamentally wrong somewhere because we cannot fathom why such a crucial presidential order is yet to be implemented,” he added.

In July, President Tinubu announced the suspension of import duties on essential food items as part of measures to combat the hunger crisis in the country. Following this, Customs Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi stated in a video posted on X that the Nigerian Customs Service would enforce the executive order.
