Nationwide #EndBadGovernance Protests Begins Today, IGP Ask Officers to Deal with Troublemakers

Nationwide protests under the #EndBadGovernance banner are set to commence today across Nigeria as youths take to the streets to protest against hunger and economic hardship.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed police forces nationwide to “deal decisively” with arsonists and troublemakers, emphasizing the need to maintain order.

Egbetokun stated that the police would not allow the situation to deteriorate into a “state of anomy.” He has put all police formations on high alert to protect innocent lives and properties from potential attacks and destruction.

“All officers and men of the Nigeria Police are hereby directed to act and deal decisively with any act of arson, intimidation or harassment of any citizen, threat to lives and properties, breach of peace, and any act of criminality that may arise or flow from the planned protest in any part of the country.

Perpetrators of any crime will be arrested and promptly prosecuted,” Egbetokun asserted.

The protests, gaining momentum on social media, are scheduled to be held across all states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

They come in response to rising food prices and basic commodities as Nigerians grapple with one of the worst inflation rates and economic crises in recent memory.

These issues are exacerbated by the government’s removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of forex windows.

Security agencies, including the police, military, and Department of State Services, have issued warnings against Kenya-styled protests.

Politicians have appealed to youths to reconsider their plans, fearing a repeat of the October 2020 EndSARS demonstrations.

Despite these warnings, the youth remain resolute, insisting that the protests will proceed as planned.
