FEMA Rescued Attempted Suicider Protesting Fuel Subsidy Return and Insecurity in Abuja

First responders of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) rescued one Shuaibu Yusuf, who, in an attempt to commit suicide, climbed a transmission tower to protest the return of fuel subsidies and insecurity.

This incident occurred on Monday on a transmission mast situated at Katampe Hill of Abuja as he attempted to kill himself while calling for the eradication of hardship, insecurity, and the return of fuel subsidies.

However, with pleas and encouragement from emergency responders, Yusuf descended from the high transmission mast and was allegedly handed to the police. This incident marks the second suicide attempt known to the public by Nigerians in July.

Recall that on July 6, 2024, a man identified as Femi from Osun State reportedly jumped into the Osun River after complaining about the economic hardship he was facing.

Also, eyewitness reports indicated that he professed to be tired of life due to hardship. According to reports, the search and rescue team are still looking for his body.

As these attempts, failed or not, are rising, it indicates a growing tension due to the underlying crisis of food hikes, inflation and recurring insecurity in the country.

Meanwhile, the first responder negotiator who oversaw Yusuf’s descent from the mask assured him he would call President Bola Tinubu’s attention.
