After conceding his party’s brutal defeat at the general election, Rishi Sunak is set to resign as United Kingdom’s prime minister on Friday.

He is expected to tender his resignation to the British Monarch, King Charles III, after which the new prime minister will meet the King for permission to form government.

The parliament are to meet on July 9.

Sunak’s Conservative party lost with a wide margin to the Labour Party, led by Keir Stamer, who is set to become U.K.’s prime minister Friday. With over 400 seats won out of 650 by the Labour Party, Stamer’s government policies will be passed quickly in the parliament.

Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides, said Sunak Thursday during an address at Northallerton. “That should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future.

“The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight. There is much to learn and reflect on, and I take responsibility for the loss.”

Sunak apologised to fellow party candidates who lost their local elections, saying he was sorry. Nevertheless, he said he gave his all to his job as the prime minister.
