Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian forward, has emerged as the Best African International award category winner at the Ghana Football Awards in Accra last Saturday.

The Atalanta forward beat off stiff competition from compatriot Victor Boniface and Edmund Tapsoba, also of Bayer Leverkusen.

Recall Napoli’s Victor Osimhen was the last winner of this award, for his contribution to the Italian club’s Serie A success in the then season.

In a video posted online, Lookman sent an appreciation message to the voters and organisers, saying, “I just want to thank you so much for the consideration, the recognition, and the votes. This means so much to me, my family, and my football. I wish I were in Ghana, but my heart is with you guys. Thank you, and God bless always.”

Lookman had a wonderful season at both domestic and international levels. At the national level, he played a crucial role in guiding the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, all the way to the final at the Africa Cup of Nations.

At the club level, he topped this season off with a memorable Europa League Final hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen.
