Thirty-five members of the House of Representatives are seeking, among other demands, a single six-year tenure for the Nigerian presidency.

The lawmakers, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP-Imo), have proposed a bill for an act to alter provisions of the constitution for a single six-year tenure for the position of president and governor, rotation of the presidency among the six geopolitical zones and the creation of offices for two vice presidents.

Ugochinyere, while addressing a news conference at the National Assembly in Abuja on Monday, said that the lawmakers were also seeking a reduction in government spending and autonomy for the local government.

He argued that the rotation would ensure equal representation and discourage desperate demands to create new states.

He said, “The bill also seeks to reduce government spending and wastage, improve governance efficiency, and ensure national stability by providing a single term of six years for the president and governors.”

He added that they wanted “the creation of the office of two vice presidents from the southern and northern parts of Nigeria.

“The 1st vice shall be a succession vice president, while the 2nd vice president shall be a minister in charge of the economy, and both shall be ministers.”
