Paqueta has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for allegedly getting booked deliberately to influence the betting market.

The charges pertain to a Premier League match against Leicester City on November 12, 2022, and subsequent fixtures in 2023 against Aston Villa on March 12, Leeds United on May 21, and Bournemouth on August 12.

According to an FA statement, Paqueta was accused of “intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market for one or more persons to profit from betting.”

The Brazilian midfielder, who has been a key player for West Ham, has until June 3 to respond to the charges. If necessary, he may request an extension to this deadline.

This development is a significant blow to Paqueta and West Ham, potentially impacting the player’s career and the club’s ongoing season.

The FA’s investigation will likely scrutinise match footage and betting patterns to ascertain the validity of the charges against Paqueta.
