The Chairman of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki, has condemned Sunday’s Coup attempt in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a press release following the failed Coup d’état, Faki expressed profound relief, “I am immensely relieved that all those who were responsible for republican institutions are safe and sound.”

I take this opportunity to condemn any use of force to change the constitutional order in any African state whatsoever,” he added.

However, details of the failed coup revealed a suspicious alliance between the coup leader, Christian Malanga, the president of the United Congolese Party (UCP), and Benjamin Zalman-Polun, an American citizen.

Self-exiled Malanga was killed at the exchange of fire between his co-conspirators and the Congolese army, while others, including his son, were arrested at the Palais de la Nation, Kinshasa.

Meanwhile, Lucy Tamlyn, the United States Ambassador to the DRC, has reacted to the involvement of a U.S. citizen, “I am shocked by the events of this morning and very concerned by reports of American citizens allegedly involved.”

Tamlyn also added an assurance to cooperate with the DRC authorities to the fullest extent as they investigate to bring the criminals involved accountable.

“Hold accountable any U.S. citizen involved in criminal acts,” she said.
