A man in Malawi was convicted on Thursday for insulting President Lazarus Chakwera by posting a TikTok video showing an animated caricature of the president dancing.

The man, Sainani Nkhoma, was found guilty by a court for sharing the video and making derogatory comments about Chakwera in a local WhatsApp group.

Members of the WhatsApp group in Mponela had reported Nkhoma to the ruling Malawi Congress Party and the police, leading to his arrest.

Judge Talakwanji Mndala stated that Nkhoma’s actions were inappropriate and set his sentencing for next week.

Nkhoma faces a potential fine of $3,500 or six years in prison.

Chakwera, 69, became Malawi’s president in 2020 after its Constitutional Court ordered the rerun of the 2019 election due to widespread irregularities. Following his victory, Chakwera said,

I’m so happy I could dance all night.
