Two people have been reported dead in a tanker fire explosion in Surulere, Lagos, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS).

The agency’s Director, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, saying the agency received a distress call late Friday about the tanker accident at the Ijesha end of the Cele link bridge in Surulere, Lagos.

According to the statement, the tanker, carrying 33,000 litres of petrol, lost control and spilt fuel, causing a large fire near the Cele link bridge.

“At approximately 23:12 hrs, emergency services were alerted to a tanker truck carrying 33k litres of petrol that lost control while navigating the roundabout to ascend the bridge. The subsequent spillage ignited a large fire, engulfing the surrounding area.

“Prompt action by the Isolo and Bolade Fire Stations of the agency contained the inferno, preventing further escalation,” the statement read.

“Regrettably, two male individuals were discovered deceased, their bodies tragically burnt beyond recognition and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, overseeing the necessary procedures. The Lagos State Ambulance Service also provided vital assistance throughout the operation,” it added.

It also mentioned that emergency responders are clearing the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow and conduct investigations.
