In a recent decree by Malian authorities on Wednesday, all political party activities have been banned.

The announcement, aired on state television, was delivered by government spokesperson Abdoulaye Maiga in the evening, citing the maintenance of public order as the primary reason behind the decision.

The decree, however, failed to specify any imminent threats posed by political parties to public order, leaving many questioning the true motivations behind the ban.

With no indication of when the suspension might be lifted, concerns over the stifling of democratic processes in Mali have intensified.

A military junta has controlled Mali since August 2020 following a coup that ousted the civilian government. Last September, the junta pledged to organise elections to restore civilian rule, but this promise was subsequently reneged upon, with technical reasons cited for the delay.

Despite calls from both domestic and international stakeholders for a swift transition to civilian governance, no concrete plans for new elections have been announced.
