Italy Introduces Digital Nomad Visa: Nigerians Welcome to Work Remotely

470

The Italian government has introduced a digital nomad visa, opening doors for third-country nationals, including Nigerians, to engage in highly-skilled freelance work or remote employment in Italy for up to 12 months, with the option for renewal. Effective from April 2024, this visa aims to provide an immigration pathway for remote workers, although employment within Italy remains uncertain. While not guaranteeing permanent residency, it can serve as a stepping stone for those looking to settle in Italy.

Applicants must earn at least three times the minimum level required for health care exemption, possess comprehensive health insurance, demonstrate accommodation in Italy, and have six months of digital nomad or remote work experience. Additionally, they must show an income of €2,335 annually and provide proof of accommodation and health insurance for the duration of their stay.

Application submissions are directed to the Italian consulate, with subsequent residence permit applications required within eight days of entry into Italy. Non-Italians employed by foreign companies need a signed declaration from their employer and a clean criminal record. Dependents, such as spouses and children under 18, can apply for family residence permits, allowing spouses to seek local employment.

Amidst tightening immigration policies in other countries, this new visa category presents an attractive opportunity for Nigerians seeking remote work and the chance to reside in Europe.
