Earthquake Strikes New York City and Northeastern US

A rare earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 shook New York City and the northeastern United States today, sending tremors along the densely populated Atlantic coast from Boston to Philadelphia.

The earthquake’s epicentre was located approximately 45 miles west of New York City, near Lebanon, New Jersey. Despite the significant tremors, there were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damages. Emergency response teams are on high alert, with authorities assessing the situation to ensure public safety.

Al Jazeera reported that the earthquake struck at 10:23 am local time, catching many residents by surprise. Buildings in Manhattan and the five boroughs of New York City experienced shaking. Vibrations were felt as far as Baltimore and Connecticut. Flights were temporarily grounded at several airports in the region, including La Guardia, Philadelphia, and Newark.

Residents have taken to social media platforms with reports of the quake’s effects. Many described feeling the ground shake for several seconds, with some comparing the sensation to a “violent rumble.”

Government officials, including President Joe Biden and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, have been briefed on the earthquake and are closely monitoring the situation. Despite the uncommon occurrence of earthquakes along the Atlantic Coast, experts remind residents to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential aftershocks.
