Niger state govt renames airport after Tinubu, after bowing to him in circulating picture

Governor of Niger State, Umar Bago, has renamed the Abubakar Imam International Airport in Minna after President Bola Tinubu. This decision was announced just months after the airport was renamed in honour of Abubakar Imam, a renowned Nigerian writer and journalist from Niger.

During a Sunday press briefing at the Government House in Minna, Aminu Takuma, the Commissioner for Industry, Trade, and Investment, revealed the airport’s renaming.

Takuma, represented by Isah Adamu, the governor’s Special Adviser on governance and reform, cited President Tinubu’s significant support for the state as the motivation behind this decision.

Governor Bago has invited President Tinubu, who is expected to arrive in Minna today, to launch an agro-processing zone and inaugurate various developmental projects within the state capital.

As part of his itinerary, Tinubu is slated to participate in the foundation-laying ceremony for the new hajj terminal at the airport.

This move follows the federal government’s directive in 2023 to rename 15 federal airports after notable Nigerians, including former President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, before the renaming announcement, a recent picture of Governor Bago bowing to greet Tinubu had begun circulating on the internet, igniting controversy and drawing mixed reactions from the public.

Some viewed the gesture as a sign of respect and appreciation for Tinubu’s contributions, while others criticised it as a display of political subservience.

Social media platforms have been inundated with discussions, with many questioning the sincerity of the governor’s actions and accusing him of prioritising political interests over public sentiment.

The image has reignited debates surrounding power dynamics and influence in Nigerian politics, particularly regarding the perceived impact of specific political figures.
