Nigerian Police places ban on POS machines around Police stations

1.1k

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive ordering the ban of Point-of-Sales (POS) machines and other electronic mobile money transaction devices within police stations and facilities across the country.

The decision to impose the ban stemed from public concerns regarding alleged illegal and illicit transactions involving POS machine operators and certain police operatives.

In a statement by the force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasised the necessity of the ban to prevent perceived corrupt practices and maintain discipline within the force.

Adejobi conveyed the message from the police boss, stating, “The ban became imperative following public outcry on alleged illegal and illicit transactions of POS machine operators with certain police operatives. The directive was aimed at preserving the integrity and security of police operation and to forestall perceived corrupt practices.”

He underscored the gravity of the situation, warning that any violation of the ban would result in severe sanctions on the leadership of the affected commands or formations.

He highlighted the inherent risks associated with the use of electronic payment devices within police facilities, including the compromise of sensitive information, financial irregularities, and the facilitation of illicit activities.

“The IGP urges all officers and personnel to comply with this directive without exception,” Adejobi quoted. “Any police officer or POS operator found contravening this order, or conniving to conduct illicit financial transactions will face appropriate disciplinary and criminal action in accordance with the extant laws and regulations.”
