Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, in his speech on Monday, urged the newly appointed justices not to allow personal ambition to influence their judgment as he reminded the justices of their accountability to God. He also urged them to consider themselves as representatives of God on earth, stating that their judgments could only be challenged in heaven.

Speaking in Abuja after the swearing-in ceremony of the 11 new Supreme Court justices, Ariwoola warned them to expect criticism and verbal attacks from disappointed litigants. He reminded them that as justices of the final court, appellants often have high expectations. He advised them to prioritize aligning with divine will and the constitution rather than trying to please everyone.

Expressing concern about the Court’s long-standing understaffing, he also emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity and adhering to the law despite challenges.

The newly appointed justices include Jummai Sankey, Chidiebere Uwa, Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, Haruna Simon Tsammani, Moore Aseimo A. Adumein, Obande Festus Ogbuinya, and Stephen Jonah Adah. Others are Habeeb Adewale O. Abiru, Jamilu Yammama Tukur, Abubakar Sadiq Umar, and Mohammed Baba Idris.

They were confirmed by the National Assembly on December 21, 2023, following President Bola Tinubu’s recommendation.
