The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has forecasted that the scorching temperatures being experienced in the country presently will continue for an extended period.

In a post shared on its official X handle, the agency outlined the potential health implications and urged Nigerians to exercise caution. They offered advisory measures to manage the oppressive heatwave.

IMPLICATIONS:

  • Dehydration: this could also cause fainting, chicken Pox disease, Measles, Heat Rash, weakness of the body, slight fever, and dry lips;
  • Heat-Related Illnesses, Respiratory Issues, and Increased Vulnerability to chronic conditions.

NiMET ADVISORIES:

  • Adequate fluid intake.
  • Seek shade, use fans, and wear light, breathable clothing to reduce exposure to high temperatures.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours (Stay indoors as much as possible between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm).

West Africa Weekly notes how the unbearable heatwave presently experienced by Nigerians is compounded by the country’s erratic power supply. This is especially true in the Southeast. Responding on Monday, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) said the situation is beyond its powers. The DisCo attributed the epileptic power supply to low energy generation, which has generally resulted in a drop in power supply availability.

“We understand the inconveniences this situation has caused our esteemed customers and appeal for their understanding as it is beyond us. We can only distribute what is allocated to us,” the Head, of Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr Emeka Ezeh, had said.

The Minister of Power, on the other hand, said he was making an effort to address the ongoing challenge of insufficient gas supply to power generation companies (GENCOs).

“Nigeria has significant gas reserves, but delivering enough gas to meet domestic demand has been a persistent issue. To tackle this, we’ve established a joint ministerial committee”, he stated.

As Nigerians battle not only the relentless heat but also electricity challenges, NiMET’s guidance may come in handy to avoid heat-related illnesses.
