The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has issued a statement ahead of Valentine’s Day, urging Nigerians to prioritise their safety and well-being while expressing affection during the season of love. The statement, signed by Toyin Aderibigbe, Head of the Public Relations and Protocol unit, emphasised the importance of enjoying Valentine’s Day while ensuring personal health.
Dr. Gambo Aliyu, Director General of NACA, stressed the need for individuals to adopt a comprehensive approach to love, which includes open communication, mutual respect, and responsible decision-making.
“As people celebrate love on Valentine’s Day, we want everyone to enjoy it while prioritising their well-being.
“NACA encourages individuals to adopt a comprehensive approach to love, which includes open communication, mutual respect, and responsible choices,” Aliyu said.
He also advised the public to incorporate protection into intimate moments, undergo regular HIV testing, and engage in discussions about sexual health with their partners.
Stressing the importance of responsible practices to ensure that love enriches lives without compromising health, Aliyu reaffirmed NACA’s commitment to providing resources and support for informed choices, stating that:
“Love is a powerful force, and by embracing responsible practices, we can ensure that it enriches our lives without compromising our health. NACA is dedicated to providing resources, information, and support to empower individuals in making informed choices.”
In light of the ongoing global health situation, NACA emphasised the importance of prioritising safety and well-being while expressing affection on Valentine’s Day. The agency announced plans to conduct comprehensive awareness campaigns to educate the public about the significance of both abstinence and safe sex practices.
According to the agency, NACA aims to create a supportive and health-conscious community where love is celebrated responsibly.
