The Super Eagles of Nigeria have mourned the lives lost during their recent clash against South Africa in the ongoing African Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Côte D’Ivoire.

On Wednesday night, five individuals reportedly died while engrossed in the semi-final match. Among the deceased were prominent figures, including APC chieftain Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, Deputy Bursar Ayuba Abdullahi, and a corps member identified as Samuel.

Anambra-born businessman Osondu Nwoye, based in Cote d’Ivoire, allegedly collapsed inside the stadium while watching the game and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

In a separate incident in Ogun State, Mikail Osundiji, a 43-year-old sales representative with Nestle, met an untimely demise. Allegedly, he suffered a fatal shock after the referee controversially canceled Nigeria’s second goal against South Africa, leading to a penalty against the Super Eagles.

Tragically, the celebration of the Super Eagles’ 4-2 victory claimed another life in Lokoja, Kogi State. Lukman, in his late twenties, lost his life while celebrating the victory with his motorcycle along Murtala Mohammed Way. He was struck by a vehicle amid the jubilation.

The Super Eagles, in a heartfelt message via their official handle, expressed deep sorrow for the fans lost during the match.

They wrote, “During the course of our semi-final match, we tragically lost a few supporters. In a cruel twist of fate, their fervent passion for the beautiful game unwittingly led them to their final moments. May their souls find eternal peace, forever remembered for their love of football and the togetherness it brings. Rest in peace.”
