Algeria Becomes the Third Country To Sack Coach After AFCON 2023 Exit

511

The Algerian Football Federation has decided to part ways with their national team coach, Djamel Belmadi, following their unexpected elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The decision was made public on Wednesday, just a day after Algeria suffered a shocking defeat to Mauritania in their final group game held in the Ivory Coast.

Algeria, a two-time winner of the AFCON, failed to meet expectations in this year’s tournament, leading to the untimely end of Belmadi’s tenure as the head coach.

The Algerian Football Federation president, Walid Sadi, made the announcement and revealed that the decision was reached amicably during a meeting with Coach Belmadi.

“I met national coach Djamel Belmadi to discuss the implications of this bitter elimination, and we came to an amicable agreement to end our relationship and to terminate his contract,” Sadi posted on X.

This development adds to a growing list of coaching changes within the African football scene during the ongoing AFCON. On the same day, the host nation Ivory Coast decided to part ways with their coach, Jean-Louis Gasset, midway through the competition.

Additionally, Ghana bid farewell to their coach, Chris Hughton, after their exit from the tournament. Algeria now becomes the third country to make a coaching change post-AFCON exit.

It was also reported earlier that Gambia’s head coach resigned following their departure from Nations Cup.
