On Sunday, 21 January 2024, the 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, visited the College of Nursing Sciences in Amichi and the School of Nursing at Iyienu Hospital in Ogidi, where he presented each institution with a cheque of N10 million to aid them in the training and education of nurses.

He announced this in a post on his X handle (formerly Twitter), where he stated that he has always advocated the training of healthcare professionals, especially nurses, who play indispensable vital roles at the primary healthcare level.

Acknowledging their critical contributions to the growth of the health sector, Peter Obi reiterated the importance of addressing expected concerns of acute shortage of nurses both locally and globally. He said:

“There are concerns that there will be an acute shortage of nurses both locally and globally, which, our trained nurses can fill while providing adequate care for our teeming population.”

Expressing gratitude to voluntary agencies for partnering with the government to improve the health and education sector, Obi also appreciated the proprietors, management teams, and teachers of these health institutions for their efforts in ensuring the production of quality and well-trained healthcare professionals.

Concluding, Obi emphasized the importance of continuous investment in the critical areas of development, stating that “we will be able to move our nation forward and build the New Nigeria we all look forward to.”
