The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 kicked off yesterday with a spectacular opening ceremony, setting the stage for an exciting tournament.

The host, Ivory Coast, ignited fans’ fervour with a brilliant performance that translated into a 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau in the tournament opener.

Seko Fofana wasted no time, finding the back of the net within four minutes, sending the home crowd into frenzied celebrations. Jean-Philippe Krasso secured the win in the second half, putting Ivory Coast in a commanding position early in the group stage.

Today, in another Group A clash, the Super Eagles of Nigeria faced a tough challenge against Equatorial Guinea, resulting in a 1-1 draw. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Nigeria found themselves trailing in the 36th minute when Iban Salvador capitalized on an opportunity to give Equatorial Guinea the lead.

Nigeria swiftly responded, with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen nodding home a delivery from Ademola Lookman less than two minutes later. Osimhen had additional opportunities to secure the lead for Nigeria, but frustration set in as chances were missed.

Zaidu Sanusi had an early opportunity, and Osimhen’s header levelled the score, but the Super Eagles couldn’t break the deadlock in the second half.

Ola Aina and Osimhen came close, with the latter missing a golden chance to secure a late victory.

With the results, Ivory Coast now leads Group A with three points after their convincing win over Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria aims to clinch their fourth AFCON title, but the draw adds suspense to their journey. The next challenges await with Equatorial Guinea facing Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria gearing up for a clash against Ivory Coast, intensifying the battle for AFCON supremacy.
