The political landscape of Ondo State has been cast into mourning following the reported demise of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu after a prolonged battle with health challenges.  Akeredolu, who had been on medical leave since June due to health issues.

Olamide Oladiji, Speaker of the Ondo House of Assembly, had received the medical leave letter from Governor Akeredolu, citing health grounds. Consequently, in accordance with constitutional provisions detailed in section 190, the reins of governance were transferred to the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in an acting capacity two weeks ago.

The Governor’s absence from the state for an extended period sparked concerns among stakeholders and citizens alike.

Reports had surfaced alleging the forgery of the Governor’s signature by certain state officials during his absence, which added fuel to the growing political crisis.

The situation escalated further with mounting pressure for Akeredolu to either step down or transfer power to his deputy, given his continued absence from Ondo State.

In a bid to resolve the leadership vacuum, Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened, leading to the ailing governor’s relieving himself of the gubernatorial responsibilities and transferring them to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

As stipulated by constitutional provisions in Section 191(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who has been serving as acting governor for about two weeks, is set to be sworn in as the substantive Governor of Ondo State.

The scheduled swearing-in ceremony is slated for 4 pm today, 27 December 2023, in adherence to the Constitution.

The passing of Governor Akeredolu has drawn condolences and tributes from politicians and citizens alike to express their thoughts to the departed leader’s family.

Meanwhile, the state awaits the formal assumption of office by Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the new Governor,
