In a monumental turnaround for healthcare and education in Abia State, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has announced the successful restoration of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Abia State University, Uturu to full accreditation status by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

The accreditation, which comes after a nearly three-year suspension, is a significant achievement for the state and a testament to its commitment to providing quality healthcare and education to its people. Governor Otti, who made the restoration of the college’s accreditation a top priority upon assuming office, expressed his satisfaction at the positive outcome. He recounted the challenges faced by students, lecturers, and patients due to the initial revocation, emphasising his promise never to allow such a situation to reoccur. The governor also revealed that his administration had made substantial investments in renovating and upgrading the college’s infrastructure, equipment, and personnel at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) in Aba.

“With this accreditation,” Otti proudly declared, “our medical students can now resume training at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) in Aba. Not only does this include a higher admission quota, but it also ensures a valid accreditation to train house officers.”

The reinstated accreditation not only signifies a victory for the state but also reaffirms the dedication to delivering quality healthcare and education to the people of Abia State.

In his statement, Governor Otti expressed gratitude to the MDCN team, led by Deputy Registrar Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma, for their thorough inspection and favourable decision. He also commended key individuals and institutions, including the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, the Vice Chancellor of ABSU, Professor Maxwell Ogbulu, and the Acting Chief Medical Director of ABSUTH, Professor John Chikezie, for their diligence and dedication in making this success a reality.

As part of the state’s continued commitment to the well-being of its citizens, Governor Otti disclosed that 20% and 15% of the 2024 annual budget have been allocated to education and health, respectively. He emphasised that these allocations are not merely favours but essential obligations to the people of Abia State.

Governor Otti’s unwavering dedication to improving healthcare and education in Abia State is evident in this achievement, and it reflects the state’s ongoing efforts to provide its citizens with access to high-quality medical services and training opportunities. The successful reinstatement of the college’s accreditation underscores the state’s commitment to advancing its healthcare and educational sectors, and it is a testament to Governor Alex Otti’s leadership and vision for a better, healthier Abia State.
