The President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, has traveled to the United States to receive a  ‘specialised’ seven-day cancer treatment, his office announced in a statement on Wednesday.

This move came a week after the 82-year-old President informed the Namibian people about cancer cells that had been found by his medical team during a routine check-up.

According to the statement, the President had accepted an offer by scientists and medical professionals in Los Angeles, California, to undergo a novel therapy to deal with the cancer cells. It is set to last for seven days before he returns to continue treatment in Namibia.

Geingob departed on Wednesday, 24 January, and is expected to return on 2, February 2024 after completing his medical treatment.

During the President’s absence, Vice President Nangolo Mumba is expected to serve as the acting President until Geingob’s return. However, the President of the Southern African country is due to step down at the end of his two terms later this year.
