18 of 26 Ogun State Legislatures Impeach Speaker

Ogun — 18 out of 26 members of the Ogun State House of Assembly have unanimously impeached Rt. Hon. Olakunle Taiwo Oluomo as speaker of the honorable house.

Oluomo was impeached on Tuesday in what appeared to be a legislative coup in dramatic scenes on the house floor. The impeached speaker was replaced with Hon. Daisi Elemide, who represents Odeda Constituency.

In a session with newsmen on Tuesday morning, Hon. Daisi Elemide said:

The speaker is not in any way higher than members, he is just the first among equal members. And whoever the member says is their speaker, is their speaker. And that is what we have demonstrated this afternoon. We just want to pass it to the whole world that there is or there has been a change in the leadership of this honorable house.

At least 18 out of 26 members have unanimously signed, supported, and picked me to be their new speaker. I am not their boss. I am only the one who will speak to guide and protect their interests. That is what we just have done. We urge and expect our people to please remain calm. We have adjourned for a week, We are in the custody of all the authorities of the house.

The Office of the State Governor, Dapo Abiodun is yet to issue a statement.
