We Have Removed Names Of Deceased, Unqualified Voters From Register – Ghana Electoral Commission

The Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC) has assured opposition parties and citizens that it has removed names of deceased and unqualified voters from the voters’ register ahead of the December 7 general election.

The commission noted that other issues, such as the omission of names of qualified voters and poor quality or damaged voter ID Cards, have been “largely resolved”.

The commission gave the assurance in response to concerns raised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) about the credibility of the Voters Register.

The NDC had requested an independent forensic audit of the Information Technology systems of the EC to guarantee the credibility of the Register ahead of the polls. 

The Party also announced it would embark on a nationwide demonstration on September 17, 2024, to demand a free and fair electoral process.

The Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Samuel Tettey, while addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday, argued that a nationwide demonstration was unnecessary as the commission was already resolving the issues raised.

Tettey also argued that the request for a forensic audit of the voters register was “misguided” and “premature”, saying an exhibition exercise already serve as an avenue for auditing the register.

“It is important to note that, all of the discrepancies were identified by the Commission’s internal processes. I’m pleased to note that as we speak they have largely been resolved.

“The Exhibition Exercise enables citizens to verify their details and allows for the unearthing of discrepancies in the register. Additionally, it provides for the correction of discrepancies in the register,” he said.

The EC appealed to Former President John Dramani Mahama, Flagbearer of the NDC, to bring the NDC to the discussion table, expressing concern that the planned demonstration may lead to tensions in the country.

“The Commission would like to assure the public and all stakeholders that all identified discrepancies with the Provisional Voters Register are being corrected. To date, the register is almost near perfect as most of the discrepancies have been fully resolved,” Tettey added.
