The Lagos State government has announced the temporary closure of the Lagos Island – Iyana Oworo carriageway to vehicular movement for 36 hours.  This decision was communicated via an official statement released on Tuesday.

The scheduled repairs commenced at midnight on Wednesday, March 6, and will conclude at 12:00 noon on Thursday, March 7, 2024, the closure follows a recent total shutdown of the Third Mainland Bridge for critical repairs.

The statement, issued through the government highlighted the necessity of the closure in the ongoing repair process.

It emphasised, “In continuation of the ongoing repair works on the Third Mainland Bridge by the Federal Ministry of Works, the Lagos Island – Iyana Oworo bound lane will be closed to vehicular traffic from 12:00 am on Wednesday 6th till 12:00 noon on Thursday 7th March, 2024.”

Motorists traveling along this route are advised to seek alternative routes previously provided to avoid potential congestion.

However, the Iyana-Oworo inward lane to the Island will remain accessible to motorists during the specified period.

“Kindly note that the Iyana-Oworo inwards island-bound carriageway will remain open to motorists heading to the Island during this period,” the statement reiterated.

It was further emphasised that the initial traffic diversion arrangements on the bridge would be reinstated following the conclusion of the 36-hour closure, signaling the completion of necessary repair tasks.

Repair efforts on the Third Mainland Bridge have been ongoing since January, with intermittent closures implemented to accommodate inbound and outbound traffic.

Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, noted,  “We appreciate the understanding of Lagosians during this period of repair. We urge motorists to cooperate with traffic management officials for seamless operations.”
