Terror Group ‘Mahmuda’ Issues Fresh Threat After Attack on Duruma Village in Kwara

52

Reports have emerged that a newly identified terrorist group calling itself Mahmuda has issued a threat to residents of Duruma village and the wider Borgu Kingdom in Kwara State days after launching a violent attack on the community.

The threat, contained in an audio message recorded in Hausa and obtained by SaharaReporters, was sent directly to residents through mobile communication channels.

In the message, the group’s leader warned of further bloodshed and ordered residents to evacuate or face deadly consequences.

This is a warning to the people of Duruma village, the Emir of Duruma, and the illiterate vigilantes who are causing the chaos, the speaker declared.

Whoever doesn’t want to fight us should pack their properties and leave. Stop going to the market, and in fact, relocate from the entire kingdom; otherwise, we will kill everyone we see.

The group blamed recent tensions on the formation of local vigilante units, accusing the Emir and residents of instigating conflict.

Despite claiming they have lived peacefully in the Borgu Kingdom for five years, the group’s leader said recent developments had forced them to prepare for violent retaliation.

We have not hurt anyone or carried arms against anybody, he said. However, since you people now prefer crisis to peace, we promise you people that you will get the crisis.

The group also issued a warning to smugglers in the region, accusing them of collaborating with local security forces and threatening to kill anyone found using certain roads.

And for the smugglers, you people should look for alternative roads. If not, we will kill everyone we see on the road. And if you think we are lying when preparing to pass, come prepared with your white burial garment, the voice warned.

This disturbing message comes just two days after the group attacked Duruma village (Karonji) in the Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Sources said the terrorists stormed the village on motorcycles on Friday evening, firing indiscriminately and setting fire to a vehicle and several motorcycles belonging to local vigilantes.

Recall West Africa Weekly earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu’s absence has raised eyebrows as armed violence continues to claim lives and displace communities across the country.

In a statement released last Thursday, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu had left Paris for London and continues overseeing national affairs abroad. He insisted that the president is “fully engaged” in governance from overseas.

However, thousands of Christians took to the streets of Jos, Plateau State, today to protest the wave of deadly attacks across local communities. The Church Denominational Leaders Forum organised the march led by Plateau’s Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Chairman, Rev. Polycarp Lubo.
