Tanker Explosion Kills Over 90 People In Jigawa State

A tragic explosion involving a petrol tanker on Wednesday morning has reportedly claimed over 90 lives in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The incident reportedly happened around 12:30 AM when the tanker, en route Nguru in Yobe State from Kano, overturned near Khadija University, Majiya, after the driver lost control.

The Public Relations Officer, Jigawa State Police Command, DSP Lawan Adam, explained that the explosion was triggered by locals who rushed to the scene to collect fuel from the overturned tanker. 

“The residents were scooping fuel when the explosion occurred, leading to a massive fire that claimed 94 lives on the spot,” DSP Adam said. 

He further reported that 50 other people sustained severe injuries and were quickly transported to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for treatment. 

He noted that authorities in the state have commenced a mass burial for the victims, while extending the sympathies of the state Commissioner of Police AT Abdullahi to the community.

According to the PPRO, the Commissioner called for increased public education on the dangers of petrol explosions and urged people to promptly report such incidents to authorities to prevent further loss of life.
