Suspected Coup Plot in Burkina Faso: Several Military Officers Arrested

1.8k

Authorities in Burkina Faso have reportedly arrested several military officers, including two high-ranking unit commanders, in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow the government. Sources indicate that Commander Frédéric Ouédraogo and Captain Elysée Tassembedo are among those detained in recent days.

According to AESInfo, the arrests come amid growing reports of a possible coup attempt targeting the administration of President Ibrahim Traoré. However, the government has not officially confirmed the charges or released details about the alleged conspiracy.

In response to the arrests, President Traoré swiftly appointed new officers to fill vacant positions, AESInfo reported. The exact number of individuals detained remains unclear, and the government has yet to provide a comprehensive statement.

There are also reports that former military personnel, previously dismissed from the army, are under investigation in connection with the suspected plot.

However, despite recent reports of an alleged plot to overthrow the government, in November 2024, Burkina Faso authorities announced that they foiled a new plot to destabilise the government.

According to officials, a suspect offered members of the Defense and Security Forces five billion FCFA, roughly $10 million, in exchange for support in undermining the government.

The Burkina Information Agency (AIB) reported that the soldiers pretended to accept the offer and coordinated a meeting with the individual. The suspect was arrested on Friday, November 8, while attempting to deliver the cash.
