Petrol Tanker Catches Fire on Sagamu-Benin Expressway as Residents Attempt to Scoop Fuel

A petrol-laden tanker caught fire on Thursday along the FIDSCO area of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ogun State. This created a tense situation as nearby residents attempted to scoop fuel from the spill.

The incident was confirmed by the Commandant of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Seni Ogunyemi, who reported that the tanker fell into a ditch before igniting.

Despite warnings from authorities, several residents were spotted trying to gather fuel from the leaking tanker, PUNCH reported.

A serious lone accident involving a loaded tanker with PMS fell into a ditch at the FISCO axis, Ijebu-Ode, along the Benin-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, inward Ijebu-Ode, Ogunyemi stated.

The police and fire service have been contacted. The community has been advised not to get close to the tanker, but they refuse. Efforts are ongoing to transload the product.

Footage from the scene shared online revealed the high-risk residents took, gathering around the leaking tanker to scoop fuel despite the imminent danger.

In a later update, Ogunyemi confirmed that the tanker had caught fire, with firefighters working urgently to contain the blaze. However, he did not disclose whether there were any casualties resulting from the fire.

The earlier reported laden tanker with PMS has caught fire. The fire service was there during the needful, Ogunyemi said.

Recall that weeks ago, a tragic explosion involving a petrol tanker claimed over 90 lives in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The incident happened around 12:30 AM when the tanker, en route to Nguru in Yobe State from Kano, overturned near Khadija University, Majiya, after the driver lost control.
