Ogun State Residents, NLC Protests Food Crisis in Nigeria

Ogun State residents and the National Union of Food Beverages and Tobacco Employees, in affiliation with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), protested on Thursday the current economic hardship in Nigeria.

In the protest, residents of Ado-Odo Otta, in Ogun State joined the public outcry as food prices increased and unemployment rose at an unbearable rate.

One of the protestants in a video chanted in Yoruba dialect, saying “E bin pa wa,” meaning, “We are hungry,” a statement borne out of the overinflated prices of food items in the market.

Recall that Minna, Kano, and other states of Nigeria had protested about food, insecurity and price hikes amidst rising Kidnappings. Yet the Tinubu-led administration had only promised to release 42,000 metric tons of grain without specifying how or when it would be distributed to curtail the food crisis in the country.

Meanwhile, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released the food price index for January 2024, which showed that the increase in food items is 29.90%, which corroborates with the reality of Nigerians in terms of food security.
