Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ Shines at BAFTA 2024

434

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” dominates the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards with an impressive 13 nominations, making it the most-nominated film on home soil. Notably, it’s also Nolan’s potential first-ever BAFTA win for best director. Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” follows closely with 11 nominations, including a best actress nod for Emma Stone.

However, the surprise lies in the limited recognition for Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster “Barbie,” which, despite its initial 15 Longlist slots, secures only five nominations. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling earn nods, but the film misses out on best film and director categories, raising eyebrows in the industry.

Saltburn” ties with “Barbie” in nominations, featuring performances by Barry Keoghan, Rosamund Pike, and Jacob Elordi. The absence of female directors, except for Justine Triet, among the nominees prompts reflection on BAFTA’s recent diversity initiatives.

Other notable contenders include “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Zone of Interest,” each earning nine nominations. Sandra Huller stands out for “The Zone of Interest,” scoring a supporting actress nomination along with a leading actress nod for “Anatomy of a Fall.” “The Holdovers” and “Maestro” secure seven nominations each, while “All of Us Strangers” lands six, featuring Claire Foy and Paul Mescal in supporting categories.

Save the date for the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony on Feb. 18 at London’s Royal Festival Hall, hosted by “Doctor Who” star David Tennant.
