The stage is set in Ikenne as Remo Stars FC, reigning champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), begin their title defence today, Friday, August 22, 2025.

The Sky Blue Stars open the 54th edition of Nigeria’s top-flight league with a highly anticipated clash against Rivers United at the Remo Stars Stadium, kickoff scheduled for 4:00 pm.

This campaign marks the 36th season since the professionalisation of the NPFL, and Remo Stars step into it with renewed ambition after lifting the league trophy last term.

The 2025/26 NPFL season has 20 teams battling for supremacy across Nigeria, with four privately owned clubs, the highest number since 2019, showcasing the growing influence of private investment in Nigerian football.

Alongside Remo Stars, Ikorodu City, Barau FC, and Kun Khalifat will compete as privately owned outfits.
