The Nigerian government has announced organising a fact-finding mission to India by sending musician 2Baba (2Face Idibia), comedian Basketmouth, Northern musician Rarara, and online influencer Ola of Lagos to explore India’s CNG ecosystem.

This announcement comes amidst Malaysia’s recent announcement to phase out compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles nationwide over safety concerns. However, Nigeria is doubling down on its CNG initiative. Under President Bola Tinubu, the government is promoting CNG as a cost-effective alternative to petrol following the removal of fuel subsidies.

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) said it had secured over $200 million in investments to establish 1,000 CNG conversion centres nationwide.

Despite the push for adoption by the government, the CNG is facing growing public scrutiny after a recent explosion at a NIPCO CNG station in Benin City, Edo State, injured three people and damaged property, reigniting debates over the safety of Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure.

According to PCNGI, the delegation will document their journey, providing Nigerians with a first-hand look at how CNG is integrated into transportation, domestic use, and industrial applications.

According to the initiative’s Vice Chairman, Toyin Subair,

Our goal is to let the people of the country be part of the process of us fully utilising our number one resource, Gas. Nigeria cannot afford doubt in our mission to make the country energy competitive, especially those sowed by politics and subsidy barons, Subair said.

The trip, supported by Nigerian energy companies Femadec Energy and Rolling Energy, includes visits to CNG conversion centres, refuelling stations, cylinder manufacturing plants, and industrial hubs. India’s robust infrastructure and successful 15-year track record with CNG are seen as a practical blueprint for what the Nigerian government aspires to achieve.
