Nigerian-American Singer Shaboozey Tops Billboard Hot 100 with “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”

1.4k

Nigerian-American country singer Shaboozey, whose real name is Collins Obinna Chibueze, has reached a significant milestone with his hit single “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” This song has climbed to the Billboard Hot 100 chart, marking Shaboozey’s first number-one hit.

Shaboozey was born in Northern Virginia to Nigerian parents. His stage name comes from the frequent mispronunciations of his surname, Chibueze, which means “God is king” in Igbo. His music blends elements of country, folk-pop, and alternative styles. He first entered the music scene with his debut album “Lady Wrangler” in 2018, after being noticed by Republic Records. Since then, he has built a loyal fan base, boasting 35.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and his most recent album, “Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going,” has also achieved millions of streams.

In addition to his chart-topping success with “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Shaboozey has made history. He joins Beyoncé as the only Black artist to have a song reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts. This is a historic achievement, as no song by a Black man or a biracial artist had previously topped both charts. Beyoncé accomplished this feat earlier this year with her hit “Texas Hold ‘Em.”

The Billboard Hot 100 chart tracks the popularity of songs in the United States based on streaming, sales, and radio airplay. Reaching the top of this chart indicates significant commercial success. Shaboozey recently collaborated with Beyoncé on two tracks for her “Cowboy Carter” album, released in March.
