Nigeria Jumps 14 Places in FIFA Ranking, Now Africa’s Third

In the latest FIFA Men’s World Ranking released on Feb. 15, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have made a significant leap, now ranking 28th in the world after climbing 14 spots from their previous 42nd position.

This jump places Nigeria as the third-highest ranked African men’s national football team, trailing only behind Morocco (12th) and Senegal (17th), with Egypt (36th) and Cote d’Ivoire (39th) also in the top five.

The rise in ranking follows the conclusion of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday, Feb. 11, where Nigeria emerged finalists, losing to Champions, Cote d’Ivoire.

This improvement for the Super Eagles also saw them moving up from sixth to third place in the African continent rankings.

FIFA rank teams based on how they perform in all the international matches the football body recognises, using a special system to give points.

According to the new FIFA ranking, the following are the top 20 African men’s national football teams:

  • Morocco: 1st in Africa, 12th in the world.
  • Senegal: 2nd in Africa, 17th in the world.
  • Nigeria: 3rd in Africa, 28th in the world.
  • Egypt: 4th in Africa, 36th in the world.
  • Cote d’Ivoire: 5th in Africa, 39th in the world.
  • Tunisia: 6th in Africa, 41st in the world.
  • Algeria: 7th in Africa, 43rd in the world.
  • Mali: 8th in Africa, 47th in the world.
  • Cameroon: 9th in Africa, 51st in the world.
  • South Africa: 10th in Africa, 58th in the world.
  • Burkina Faso: 11th in Africa, 61st in the world.
  • Congo DR: 12th in Africa, 63rd in the world.
  • Cabo Verde: 13th in Africa, 65th in the world.
  • Ghana: 14th in Africa, 67th in the world.
  • Guinea: 15th in Africa, 76th in the world.
  • Equatorial Guinea: 16th in Africa, 79th in the world.
  • Gabon: 17th in Africa, 84th in the world.
  • Zambia: 18th in Africa, 87th in the world.
  • Uganda: 19th in Africa, 92nd in the world.
  • Angola: 20th in Africa, 93rd in the world.
