The legendary Nigerian singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away on July 30, 2024, will be laid to rest today in Lagos.
West Africa Weekly had reported in July that Onwenu died at the age of 72 after performing at a birthday celebration for Mrs. Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
She collapsed after her performance and was rushed to the Reddington Hospital, Lagos, where she was declared dead.
Her funeral service is set to take place at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, followed by a private interment at a vault in Ikoyi. According to a funeral flyer shared by the family, the Service of Songs will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., while the burial will occur between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Onwenu, born on January 31, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, enjoyed a remarkable career that spanned music, film, politics, and journalism, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s cultural landscape. She will be remembered for all her contributions to Nigeria and beyond.
