The Board of Directors of the Liberia Airport Authority has unanimously voted to halt operations by a Ghanaian security firm to take over the security department at Roberts International Airport, Front Page Africa reported.

According to the report, the former Board of Directors of the LAA, headed by veteran soccer star Musa Shannon, contracted out the RIA Security Department to a Ghanaian Company called Star Africa Aviation Security Services SAASS.

The new board mandated that the Managing Director of the LAA, Hon. Jero H. Mends-Cole, send the contract to the National Security Advisor to the President for review and advice. According to sources, it is just an option.

The swiftness in action, civil aviation experts say, is being hailed by many, who suggest the steps are pointers that things could get better at Liberia’s only international airport.

The Board is doing very well with these moves; these are the kinds of things Boards of Directors should be doing—checkmating excesses in the best interest of these institutions. a source told FPA.

The Board has also directed management to acquire new navigation systems, as the ones present at RIA are outdated and faulty, and to be replaced through a company called Luetech, which is expected to boost the performance of this airport and see international carriers returning.

Sources say changes at RIA are being championed by the new Board Chairman, Massaquoi M. Kamara, who has relocated the Board’s offices from Monrovia to RIA in Harbel, Margibi County.

With Chairman Kamara at the helm of affairs, officials say the Board has instituted a monthly or bi-monthly meeting session to drive its agenda of giving Liberian airports a face-lift.
