In a move that has been rumoured for weeks, former Nigeria Head Coach José Peseiro has finally been appointed as the new coach of 5-time CAF Champions League winners Zamalek SC.

The Portuguese tactician replaces Swiss coach Christian Gross, who lasted barely three months in charge of the Egyptian side.

Peseiro’s appointment marks a return to familiar territory, having previously managed Al Ahly during the 2015/16 season. His last stint with the Nigerian national team earned him a reputation as a seasoned coach. After guiding the Super Eagles to a runners-up finish at the 2023 Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Peseiro has reportedly put pen to paper on a one-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee, although several outlets have reported that his contract is worth about $75,000 a month.

The Zamalek Club Board, headed by President Hussein Labib, announced the agreement with Peseiro while thanking former coach Christian Gross and his staff for their efforts at the club.

“The Board reiterates its sincere appreciation for the great efforts made by Gross and his assistants, wishing them well for the rest of their careers. The Board of Directors also decided, following the recommendation of the Sports Planning Committee, which reviewed several coaches’ resumes, to appoint the Portuguese José Peseiro, former coach of Porto and Sporting Lisbon, as head of the technical staff of Zamalek for a period of one and a half seasons.”

After spending his first eight years as a manager in the third and fourth tiers of Portuguese football, Peseiro went on to build a nomadic CV managing 17 teams across 8 countries, including Sporting CP, Porto, Al Ahly, Venezuela, Braga and the Saudi Arabia national team.

His latest move to Zamalek marks a new chapter in his illustrious career, and fans of The White Knights will be eager to see him hit the ground running on his next game against arch-rivals Al Ahly.
