The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has postponed the registration for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to Monday, February 3. The process was initially scheduled to begin on January 31.
JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, announced the change on Friday. He explained that the decision was necessary to implement key adjustments to the registration process.
These adjustments came in light of the recent suspension of certain law programmes at selected universities, as submitted to the board by the Council for Legal Education,” the statement read.
JAMB also identified irregularities in approving some computer-based test (CBT) centres. It said certain centres had used deceptive means to secure accreditation, leading to a review process to disapprove them. University admissions in Nigeria are often affected by irregularities at various levels. Last year, JAMB’s Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede, called out five Nigerian universities for allegedly conducting illegal admissions. He made the accusation during an admission policy meeting in Abuja.
The universities named were the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Delta State University (DELSU), and Kwara State University. However, some education stakeholders disagreed with JAMB’s position at the meeting. They referenced the University Autonomy Act, arguing that it allows institutions to make independent academic and administrative decisions.
Speaking about the recent delay in registration, JAMB assured candidates and stakeholders that the additional time would help streamline the process. The body added that the extra time would be used to ensure all necessary changes were made for a smooth registration exercise.
