Iwájú: Disney+ Show Praised Despite Availability Concerns

444

Critics are raving about Disney+’s new show, Iwájú, praising its exceptional animation, superb voice acting, and captivating portrayal of a futuristic Nigeria. Created by the African outfit Kugali and led by friends from Nigeria and Uganda, the series aims to elevate African animation and graphic novels.

Iwájú follows Tola, a young girl navigating a sci-fi version of Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling megacity. The series features luxury flying cars, bionic-armed supervillains, and AI pets, set against the backdrop of Nigerian Pidgin and voiced entirely by West African actors.

While some critics have noted flaws in pacing and character development, the show’s high-quality animation has garnered praise. Despite the positive reviews, some Nigerians have expressed frustration over the unavailability of Disney+ in their country.

However, Disney has announced that Nigerians with DSTV subscriptions will be able to watch Iwájú on the Disney Channel. Reviews from Australia’s ABC News and US news website Mashable also commend the show’s unique African perspective and stunning visuals.

Social media reactions from viewers who could access the show have been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising its authenticity and cultural significance. Nigeria’s culture minister has also lauded Iwájú for telling Nigerian stories from a local perspective.

The collaboration between Disney and Kugali marks a significant milestone in African storytelling, with the creators hoping to inspire the next generation of artists. Iwájú taps into Afrofuturism, envisioning a future centred on black communities while still offering universal themes of self-identity and family.

Overall, Iwájú promises to be a groundbreaking series that celebrates Nigerian culture and captivates audiences worldwide.
