The announcement by Governor Dapo Abiodun on the commencement of asphalt laying on completed sections of the Ota-Abeokuta Expressway has sparked reactions online, with many Ogun State residents questioning the durability and quality of the ongoing reconstruction project.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Governor Abiodun described the development as a “significant milestone” in his administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure and enhance the state’s socio-economic development.
However, the governor’s message was criticised by concerned citizens who highlighted issues with the project.
One user, @Oaklandice, lamented the lack of attention paid to the heavy usage of roads by industrial vehicles.
The way this project is handled is below par. It’s a major link for all the big factories around that corridor. The heavy trucks that ply that road won’t make this substandard project last a year. Please allow the FG to do it, if you can’t do it properly, the user wrote.
Another user, @idofoi, pointed out the absence of drainage systems, which had contributed to the road’s initial deterioration.
Asphalt laying on a road without drainage. The road got damaged in the first place because there was no drainage, and we are repeating the same mistake and calling it an achievement. This is a waste of taxpayers’ money, sir.
Echoing these sentiments, @Babcan_Inc expressed scepticism about the project’s longevity.
Mr Gov., you’re pouring light surface asphalt with no drainage. How will this project last the test of time? You can do better than this.
Another user @Barbartol:
I think the people have endured enough and can still take another year of your administration ensuring drainages are ready before laying those asphalt. That asphalt will wash off the surface in no time.
Recall that on August 23, the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, flagged off the reconstruction of The Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway, which has been deplorable for over two decades.
